Description

Libycoceras ismaeli Ammonite Fossil – Maastrichtian Upper Cretaceous, Algeria

This genuine Libycoceras ismaeli ammonite fossil is a highly collectable Upper Cretaceous marine cephalopod specimen from Algeria, dating to the Maastrichtian Stage, approximately 72 to 66 million years old. The Maastrichtian represents the final stage of the Cretaceous Period, shortly before the extinction event that ended the reign of the ammonites and many other marine and terrestrial groups. This fossil therefore comes from one of the last great chapters in ammonite evolution.

This fossil is a genuine specimen and includes a Certificate of Authenticity lifetime guarantee generic card. It has been carefully chosen as an individual display and study piece, with a photo that shows the actual specimen you will receive. Full sizing please see photo.

Geology and Geological Age

Libycoceras ismaeli lived during the Maastrichtian Stage of the Upper Cretaceous, a time of warm global climates, high sea levels and widespread shallow marine environments across North Africa. Algeria, along with neighbouring regions of the southern Tethyan margin, preserves important Cretaceous marine sediments that record the ancient seas which once covered parts of the Sahara and North African platform.

During this period, the region supported a rich marine ecosystem containing ammonites, nautiloids, bivalves, gastropods, echinoids, fish, sharks, marine reptiles and other invertebrate life. Ammonites such as Libycoceras were active marine cephalopods, related to modern squid, octopus and cuttlefish, although they possessed an external chambered shell. This shell allowed the animal to control buoyancy while moving through the water column.

Fossil Type and Species

This specimen belongs to the species Libycoceras ismaeli, an Upper Cretaceous ammonite known from North African Maastrichtian deposits. The genus Libycoceras is especially notable for its distinctive shell shape when compared with many more tightly coiled ammonites. It belongs to the heteromorph ammonite group, a broad category of ammonites with shell forms that depart from the classic flat spiral shape seen in many earlier ammonites.

Libycoceras is generally associated with the family Sphenodiscidae and the order Ammonitida. These ammonites are known for compressed, often smooth to weakly ornamented shells, with a strong emphasis on whorl shape and suture pattern rather than heavy ribbing. Libycoceras ismaeli is a recognised Maastrichtian ammonite species and is particularly valued by collectors interested in late Cretaceous cephalopods from North Africa.

Morphology and Collectable Features

Libycoceras ammonites are admired for their unusual form and scientific interest. Unlike many common ammonites with strongly ribbed, tightly planispiral shells, Libycoceras may show a more distinctive, irregular or partly uncoiled shell form depending on preservation and growth stage. The shell can display smooth to gently sculptured surfaces, compressed whorls and elegant curvature, giving the fossil a striking appearance as a display specimen.

As an ammonite, the original animal lived in the outer body chamber while the inner chambers were used for buoyancy regulation. The shell would have been divided internally by septa, with sutures marking the junctions between the septa and the shell wall. In well-preserved ammonites, these suture lines can be one of the most important diagnostic features for identification and scientific study.

Depositional Environment

This Libycoceras ismaeli ammonite originated from marine sediments laid down in the warm waters of the Late Cretaceous Tethyan realm. The depositional environment was likely a shallow to moderately deep marine setting, where carbonate-rich muds, fine sediments and shell material accumulated on the sea floor. After the ammonite died, its shell settled into the sediment and was gradually buried.

Over millions of years, mineral-rich groundwater passed through the surrounding rock, helping to preserve the shell as a fossil. The resulting specimen is a natural record of an ancient marine animal that lived in the final few million years before ammonites disappeared from the fossil record.

Upper Cretaceous Marine Life of Algeria

Algeria is an important source of North African Cretaceous fossils, particularly from marine deposits that formed along the southern margins of the ancient Tethys Ocean. Fossils from this region help show how diverse marine life remained during the final stage of the Cretaceous Period. Libycoceras ismaeli is especially interesting because it represents one of the late-surviving ammonite lineages from this time.

For collectors, this fossil offers both visual appeal and palaeontological importance. It is suitable for fossil collections, natural history displays, educational use, geology study, cabinet display or as a distinctive gift for anyone interested in prehistoric marine life.

Authenticity and Display

This is a genuine Libycoceras ismaeli ammonite fossil from the Maastrichtian, Upper Cretaceous of Algeria. It includes a Certificate of Authenticity lifetime guarantee generic card, making it an excellent addition to a fossil collection or display. The fossil shown in the photo is the actual carefully chosen specimen you will receive. Full sizing please see photo.
