Ammonites are one of the most recognisable fossils around, this is due to their familiar spiral shape shell, reminiscent of what we know as a snail shell, though these creatures are not related to snails at all! They were marine animals, present between 240 – 65 million years ago, who had a coiled external shell similar to that of the modern nautilus, and although they resembled a modern day nautilus, these molluscs are more closely related to living coleoids (i.e. octopuses, squid, and cuttlefish!)

These beautiful ammonites have been sliced in half and polished to expose the amazing chambers inside the fossil.

Description

This listing features a genuine sliced and polished ammonite fossil, sourced from Jurassic limestone deposits in Somerset, UK. These ammonites date back approximately 190 to 170 million years, when they lived in warm, shallow seas that covered much of what is now southern England.

Ammonites are one of the most recognisable fossils in the world, thanks to their distinctive spiral shells. Though often mistaken for snail shells, ammonites were actually marine cephalopods, more closely related to squid, octopuses, and cuttlefish than to gastropods. They used their chambered shells for buoyancy control, moving efficiently through the oceans by regulating gases within the shell’s internal chambers.

This particular specimen has been expertly sliced and polished to expose its inner chambers, revealing intricate crystalised structures and natural mineralisation patterns. The fossil showcases the beauty of ancient marine life while offering insight into the biology and evolution of these now-extinct creatures.

Geological Context: This ammonite was collected from Jurassic limestone beds in Somerset, a region well-known for its abundance of marine fossils, especially from the Lower and Middle Jurassic periods. These layers represent sediment laid down in ancient seabeds, perfectly preserving ammonites and other marine organisms over millions of years.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
