£24.00

Fossil Type & Species:

This listing features a genuine ammonite fossil of Lissoceras semicostulatum, a refined and scientifically important ammonite species from the Romani Subzone of the Bajocian Stage, Middle Jurassic. This elegant fossil was collected at Oborne Wood, Dorset, United Kingdom, and comes from the highly regarded Alice Purnell Collection, known for premium British fossils with documented provenance.

Geological Formation & Insight:

Lissoceras is a genus within the family Lissoceratidae, characterised by its smooth, involute shells with subdued ribbing and a circular cross-section. The species Lissoceras semicostulatum is an important index species in the Romani Subzone, dating to the Middle Bajocian (~170 million years ago), and is widely used in biostratigraphy.

The specimen was collected from the Inferior Oolite Formation, a classic Middle Jurassic marine limestone unit in southern England. During the Bajocian, the Dorset region was submerged beneath a warm, shallow sea — part of a vast shelf environment rich in marine life including ammonites, bivalves, brachiopods, and echinoderms.

Oborne Wood, near Sherborne in Dorset, is a significant site for well-preserved ammonite fossils from the Inferior Oolite. Fossils from this location are sought after for their aesthetic appeal, scientific value, and clarity of stratigraphic context.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
