This carefully selected fossil is a genuine Maconiceras sp. ammonite from Heinzenberg, Switzerland. It dates to the Toarcian stage of the Lower Jurassic. Lower Jurassic Toarcian Geology
The Toarcian Age formed the final part of the Early Jurassic and lasted from approximately 182 to 174 million years ago. During this interval, the region that would eventually become the Alps lay within a complex marine realm connected to the Tethys Ocean. Mud, carbonate-rich sediment and other material accumulated in basins and on submarine slopes, preserving evidence of ammonites and other marine organisms.
The present Alpine landscape did not yet exist. Much later, movement between tectonic plates folded, faulted and uplifted these former seabed deposits. Erosion then exposed Jurassic rocks high above modern sea level. A fossil from Switzerland therefore records both ancient marine life and the dramatic geological processes that built the Alps.
Maconiceras Ammonite
Maconiceras is an extinct ammonite genus within the order Ammonitida. Ammonites were marine cephalopods related to living squid, octopus and nautilus. Their coiled shells were divided internally into chambers. The animal occupied the outer body chamber, while sealed earlier chambers helped regulate buoyancy.
The identification sp. means that the specimen can be assigned to the genus Maconiceras while no individual species name is asserted. This is a standard scientific convention that preserves useful taxonomic information without overstating what can be established from one fossil. Identification considers shell coiling, whorl proportions, umbilical width, ribbing and the form of the outer margin.
Ammonites are particularly valuable for dating Jurassic marine strata. Their lineages evolved rapidly and many forms spread across broad marine areas. Palaeontologists compare ammonite assemblages to recognise biozones, correlate separate outcrops and refine the relative ages of rock layers.
