Description
This striking fossil is a genuine specimen of the extinct ammonite genus Mammites, found in Cretaceous-aged strata from Morocco. It originates specifically from the Turonian Stage of the Late Cretaceous, dating back approximately 93.9 to 89.8 million years ago. Mammites ammonites were once widespread and are especially well-documented in the fossiliferous deposits of North Africa.
The genus Mammites is characterised by its robust, moderately involute shell, strong ribbing, and tuberculate ornamentation, making it easily distinguishable from other coeval ammonites. These features are beautifully preserved in this example, highlighting the distinctive morphology of this Cretaceous cephalopod.
