This listing is for a genuine Mass Death Crinoid and shell block fossil from the Blue Lias, Jurassic: Hock Cliff, Gloucestershire, UK. This carefully chosen fossil specimen includes a Certificate of Authenticity lifetime guarantee generic card. The photo shows the actual fossil you will receive, allowing you to view the natural crinoid remains, associated shell material, matrix, preservation, surface texture and overall display character of this individual piece before purchase. Full sizing details can be seen in the photo.

Your specimen was discovered by our own team members, Alister and Alison, and has been cleaned, prepped and treated by Alison. This gives the fossil a clear collecting history, from discovery through to careful preparation and presentation, making it an appealing choice for collectors who value genuine provenance and authentic British Jurassic fossils.

Crinoid Fossil Information

Crinoids are marine echinoderms related to modern sea lilies, feather stars, starfish and sea urchins. Many fossil crinoids had a stem made from stacked calcite plates, a cup-like body and branching arms used to filter food particles from seawater. Because their skeletons were made of many separate hard parts, crinoids often disarticulated after death, leaving stem pieces, columnals, ossicles and plate fragments preserved within fossil-bearing rock.

A mass death crinoid block is especially interesting because it can preserve numerous crinoid elements together in one natural specimen. This type of fossil association gives a stronger impression of an ancient marine event or accumulation than a single isolated fossil. The crinoid remains may be preserved alongside shell fragments and other marine debris, showing part of the seabed community that existed in the Jurassic sea.

Crinoid fossils are highly collectable because they represent a distinctive part of ancient marine life. Unlike ammonites, which were active swimming cephalopods, crinoids lived attached to or resting near the sea floor, feeding from the surrounding water. Their delicate segmented structure and calcite skeleton make them excellent fossils for study, display and educational collections.

Shell Block and Marine Fossil Association

The shell block element adds extra geological and visual interest to this specimen. Shell blocks can contain a natural mixture of fossil material, including bivalves, brachiopods, crinoid fragments and other marine remains. This type of fossil-rich matrix records the accumulation of hard skeletal material on the ancient seabed, where shells and crinoid parts were buried within sediment and preserved over millions of years.

A crinoid and shell block is ideal for collectors who enjoy fossils that show a natural palaeoenvironment rather than a single prepared specimen. The combination of crinoid remains and shell material gives the piece texture, variation and strong display appeal, making it suitable for a fossil cabinet, geology display, teaching collection or natural history arrangement.

Blue Lias Geological Setting

This specimen comes from the Blue Lias, one of Britain’s most famous Lower Jurassic rock units. The Blue Lias is known for alternating layers of limestone and mudstone, deposited in an ancient marine environment. These sediments preserve a rich fossil record, including ammonites, belemnites, bivalves, brachiopods, crinoids, fish remains and occasional marine reptile material.

The Blue Lias represents a time when shallow Jurassic seas covered much of what is now western and southern Britain. Fine sediment and lime-rich material accumulated on the seabed, creating conditions where marine organisms could be buried and fossilised. A crinoid and shell block from this formation provides an excellent example of the seabed communities that lived during this important period of Earth history.

Jurassic Hock Cliff, Gloucestershire Locality

Hock Cliff in Gloucestershire is a notable fossil locality associated with Blue Lias exposures in the River Severn region. Fossils from this area are valued by collectors because they combine strong British locality appeal with classic Lower Jurassic geological context. The Blue Lias of Gloucestershire has long been of interest to fossil collectors and geologists for its marine fossils and layered sedimentary rocks.

A Mass Death Crinoid and shell block from Hock Cliff is well suited to collections focused on British fossils, Jurassic marine life, Blue Lias specimens, fossil echinoderms, shell beds and ancient seabed environments. Its locality, geological formation and natural fossil association make it a distinctive display piece with strong educational value.

Preparation, Authenticity and Display Appeal

This fossil has been cleaned, prepped and treated by Alison to help present the specimen clearly while retaining its natural geological character. Careful preparation is important with crinoid and shell block material, as it helps reveal the fossil details, matrix texture and natural arrangement while preserving the authentic appearance of the piece.

The specimen is suitable for fossil collectors, crinoid enthusiasts, geology students, natural history displays, educational collections, cabinet displays or as a distinctive gift for someone interested in British palaeontology. It is supplied with a Certificate of Authenticity lifetime guarantee generic card, confirming that it is a genuine fossil specimen. The fossil shown in the photo is the exact piece you will receive.
