£18.00

Introducing a truly striking MELCHIORITES MELCHIORIS iridescent fossil ammonite, preserved with a dazzling natural Mother of Pearl shell finish. This exceptional fossil dates from the Albian Stage of the Early Cretaceous Period (approximately 113 to 100 million years ago) and was uncovered in the fossil-rich regions of Madagascar.

Geology & Origin:

During the Albian age, Madagascar was covered by shallow seas, providing a perfect habitat for marine creatures like ammonites. Upon death, the shells were rapidly buried under fine sediments, allowing for excellent fossilization. Rarely, as with this specimen, the original aragonite layer was preserved, creating a vibrant and colorful iridescent “Mother of Pearl” surface that shines beautifully under light.

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
