Genuine Mesolithic Flint End Scraper

This carefully selected archaeological artefact is a genuine Mesolithic flint end scraper dating to approximately 8000–4000 BC. It was discovered at Branksome Dene Chine, Bournemouth, Dorset, on the south coast of England and later became part of an old collection.

End scrapers are among the most characteristic stone tools of the Mesolithic period and were essential implements for daily life. Unlike projectile points or knives, these tools were specifically designed with a steeply retouched working edge positioned at one end of the flake or blade. This robust edge allowed repeated scraping and finishing of a wide variety of natural materials while remaining durable enough for prolonged use.

An end scraper is a specialised prehistoric tool manufactured from a flake or blade of flint with deliberate retouch concentrated across its distal end. The repeated removal of small flakes produced a steep, strong working edge capable of withstanding considerable pressure during scraping motions.

Unlike cutting tools that relied upon razor-sharp edges, end scrapers functioned through controlled abrasion. Their durable scraping edge was ideally suited to working softer organic materials including animal hide, wood, antler and bone.

Communities lived as highly mobile hunter-gatherers, travelling seasonally between coastal areas, rivers, lakes and woodland in search of food and raw materials. Their economy relied upon hunting deer, wild boar and smaller mammals, fishing rivers and coastal waters, collecting shellfish and gathering edible plants, nuts and berries.

Stone tools formed an essential part of everyday life. Flint was used to manufacture hunting equipment, woodworking implements, hide-processing tools and domestic cutting implements that enabled these communities to exploit a wide variety of natural resources.

End scrapers were indispensable within this technological system, particularly during the preparation of animal skins for clothing, shelters and containers.

Flint Geology and Material Composition

Retouch could be carried out using careful percussion or pressure flaking with antler, bone or hardwood implements. Great precision was required to maintain the desired edge angle without weakening the body of the tool.

Everyday Uses of a Mesolithic End Scraper
