Geological and Paleontological Information

Michelinoceras is a genus of extinct orthoconic nautiloid cephalopods, often preserved in marine sedimentary rocks. The Hungry Hollow Formation is a fossil-rich unit within the Devonian-aged Hamilton Group, and is internationally recognized for its exceptionally preserved marine fauna, including brachiopods, corals, trilobites, and cephalopods.

  • Phylum: Mollusca
  • Class: Cephalopoda
  • Order: Orthocerida
  • Family: Michelinoceratidae
  • Superfamily: Orthocerataceae
  • Geological Stage: Middle to Upper Devonian (specific member stratigraphy varies within the formation)
  • Depositional Environment: Warm, shallow marine carbonate shelf; characterized by limestones and calcareous shales with high fossil content
  • Morphological Features: Long, straight shell (orthocone) with multiple internal chambers (phragmocone) separated by septa; features a central or subcentral siphuncle for buoyancy regulation; surface may show growth lines or fine transverse ornamentation
  • Notable: Fossils from the Arkona area have been key in refining Devonian biostratigraphy in North America. Cephalopods like Michelinoceras reflect a transitional evolutionary stage toward more complex coiled nautiloids and ammonoids.

Why This Fossil Is Unique

This beautifully preserved orthocone fossil from Arkona highlights both the elegant structural form and the fascinating evolutionary history of early cephalopods. Devonian Information

The Devonian Period (419–359 million years ago), known as the "Age of Fishes," was a time of major evolutionary advances in both marine and terrestrial life. The oceans were dominated by armored placoderm fish, early sharks, and lobe-finned fish like Tiktaalik, which had features that helped vertebrates transition to land. Coral reefs flourished, and ammonites became more diverse. On land, the first forests appeared, with early trees like Archaeopteris, leading to a drop in atmospheric carbon dioxide and climate cooling. The first tetrapods (four-legged vertebrates) began evolving from fish, marking a critical step in the evolution of amphibians. The period ended with the Devonian extinction, likely caused by ocean anoxia and climate shifts, wiping out many marine species and reshaping ecosystems.
