This genuine ammonite fossil is identified as Miodesmoceras lechicum and comes from Mnich in the Silesian Voivodeship of Poland. It dates to the Barremian stage of the Lower Cretaceous. Barremian Lower Cretaceous Age

The Barremian is an Early Cretaceous stage dating to approximately 129 to 125 million years ago. During this interval, parts of central and southern Europe were covered by seas connected to the ancient Tethys Ocean. These marine environments supported ammonites, belemnites, bivalves, gastropods, echinoids, fish, and many other organisms.

After death, an ammonite shell could settle onto the seabed and become buried by fine marine sediment. Compaction, mineral replacement, and lithification preserved the shell or its internal mould. Later tectonic activity, uplift, erosion, and excavation exposed fossil-bearing Lower Cretaceous rocks in southern Poland.

Miodesmoceras lechicum

Miodesmoceras was an extinct marine cephalopod with a planispirally coiled shell divided internally into chambers. The living animal occupied the final body chamber, while earlier sealed chambers helped regulate buoyancy. Ammonites were relatives of modern squid, cuttlefish, and nautiluses, although they formed their own diverse and now extinct group.

Fossil specialists distinguish ammonites by comparing shell shape, whorl proportions, umbilical width, ribbing, constrictions, tubercles, and the form of the outer edge. Desmoceratid ammonites commonly show relatively smooth, involute to moderately evolute shells, with subtle ornament or constrictions that vary through growth.
