Genuine Morphoceras Ebrayiceras pseudoanceps Ammonite

This is a genuine Morphoceras (Ebrayiceras) pseudoanceps ammonite microconch from the Lower Bathonian Stage of the Middle Jurassic. It was collected near Dijon in Côte-d’Or, France, a region containing important fossil-bearing Jurassic marine rocks. The photographs show the actual specimen offered, so the natural shell form, colour, matrix and preservation visible in the images belong to the fossil you will receive.

Geological Age and Locality

The Bathonian Stage dates to approximately 168 to 166 million years ago. During this interval, extensive areas of what is now France were covered by warm shallow seas. Sediment accumulated on the seabed and sometimes buried ammonite shells before they were destroyed. Compaction, mineral-rich groundwater and geological change preserved those remains as fossils over millions of years. Dijon and the surrounding Côte-d’Or area lie within Burgundy, where Jurassic strata provide evidence of these ancient marine environments.

About the Ammonite

Ammonites were extinct marine cephalopods related to modern squid, cuttlefish and nautiluses. Their coiled external shells were divided internally into chambers. The animal lived in the final chamber, while earlier chambers helped regulate buoyancy. The term microconch describes the smaller adult shell form recognised in dimorphic ammonite pairs and is an interesting aspect of ammonite biology.

The spiral geometry and ribbed ornament of this specimen are visually attractive and scientifically informative. Fossils may preserve original shell material, an internal mould, mineral replacement, surrounding matrix or natural weathering. These authentic variations result from fossilisation and make every specimen unique.
