Mosasaurs were large marine reptiles that were well-adapted to living in the warm, shallow, epicontinental seas prevalent during the late Cretaceous Period. They breathed air & were powerful swimmers making them so well adapted to this environment that they gave birth to live young, rather than return to the shore to lay eggs, as sea turtles do. Mosasaurs had many qualities of a modern day snake, they had two rows of teeth in their upper jaw, the main set, and a smaller set toward the rear & center of their mouths. These teeth, like snakes, were thought to help hold onto & swallow lager prey whole. Their jaws could also expand, as snakes do, to help them swallow whole prey.

About Mosasaurs:

Mosasaurs were apex predators of the ancient seas, growing up to 50 feet in length depending on the species. They were highly adapted marine reptiles, with paddle-like limbs, streamlined bodies, and powerful tails that propelled them through the water with speed and agility. Unlike marine reptiles like ichthyosaurs or plesiosaurs, mosasaurs were closely related to modern snakes and monitor lizards, and their anatomy shows this connection.

Their jaws were double-hinged and capable of expanding, allowing them to swallow large prey whole, much like snakes today. In addition to their main set of sharp conical teeth, they possessed a second row of teeth on the pterygoid bones in the roof of the mouth—used to grip struggling prey and assist with swallowing. This unique trait helped make mosasaurs fearsome marine hunters capable of taking down fish, ammonites, seabirds, and even smaller marine reptiles.

Mosasaurs were viviparous (they gave birth to live young), which meant they were completely adapted to life at sea and did not need to come ashore to reproduce—unlike sea turtles.

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
