Description
For sale is a genuine fossil tooth from a Mosasaur, a large marine reptile that ruled the seas during the Cretaceous period (~100–66 million years ago). This specimen was discovered in the phosphate-rich beds of Morocco, a region renowned for yielding exceptionally preserved marine fossils.
Mosasaurs were apex predators of the Late Cretaceous oceans, some growing over 15 metres (50 feet) long. They were powerful swimmers and obligate marine reptiles, meaning they never returned to land and even gave birth to live young. With elongated bodies, paddle-like limbs, and a powerful tail for propulsion, Mosasaurs were well-adapted for hunting in shallow epicontinental seas.
The teeth offered in this listing most commonly belong to Liodon anceps, one of the more formidable species, but other species such as Platecarpus ptychodon and Mosasaurus beaugei may also be present. These teeth are often identified by their robust shape and visible enamel ridges. Some specimens may show signs of their unique dental arrangement: two rows of teeth in the upper jaw—one primary row and a secondary inner row to grip slippery prey.
Geological Context: These teeth were found in the Cretaceous phosphate beds of the Ouled Abdoun Basin in Morocco. This geological formation is one of the most fossil-rich marine sediment deposits in the world, representing a period when northern Africa was covered by a warm, shallow sea teeming with marine reptiles, sharks, and fish.
