Description
This exceptional fossil belongs to the extinct species Cenoceras inornatum, a nautiloid cephalopod from the Lower Bathonian Stage of the Middle Jurassic, approximately 167 million years old. It was discovered at Burton Bradstock, a renowned fossil-rich site along the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site in Dorset, UK.
Cenoceras is an extinct genus of nautiloid, related to modern-day nautiluses. These marine creatures possessed a coiled external shell and are often found in marine sedimentary rocks. Unlike their ammonite relatives, nautiloids such as Cenoceras inornatum had simpler suture patterns and a central siphuncle for buoyancy control, allowing them to navigate the ancient seas with ease.
This fossil is part of the prestigious Alice Purnell Collection, known for its meticulously curated and scientifically significant specimens. The fossil has been expertly prepped and cleaned, revealing the details of its chambered shell structure—making it a desirable specimen for collectors and fossil enthusiasts.
