Description
This striking polished section of Nautilus Cenoceras inornatum is a beautifully preserved example of a Jurassic nautiloid cephalopod from the Lower Bathonian Stage, dated to approximately 168 million years ago. Discovered in Burton Bradstock, Dorset, part of the world-renowned Jurassic Coast, this fossil showcases the intricate internal chambering and shell structure characteristic of ancient nautiluses.
Nautilus species like Cenoceras inornatum were free-swimming marine molluscs related to modern-day nautiluses and more distantly to squid and octopuses. They used their coiled, chambered shells for buoyancy, regulating their position in the water column through gas exchange in the siphuncle that ran through the shell chambers.
This specimen has been sectioned and professionally polished to reveal its internal structure, making it an ideal display piece for fossil enthusiasts, collectors, or educators. It is part of the prestigious Alice Purnell Collection, known for its museum-quality fossil specimens.
