Genuine Obsidian Bifacial Point from the USA

This carefully chosen archaeological artefact is a genuine obsidian bifacial point from the USA. It was deliberately shaped on both faces using controlled stone-knapping techniques, producing a pointed lithic implement with worked margins and a balanced profile.

The term “bifacial” describes an artefact from which flakes have been removed across two opposing faces. This method allowed the maker to thin the stone, refine its outline and produce sharp cutting edges. Depending on its size, proportions and method of hafting, a bifacial point could serve as a projectile point, spear point, knife or multifunctional cutting tool.

Bifacial Lithic Artefact Type

Bifacial tools represent an important category of Indigenous North American stone technology. Unlike a simple flake tool worked mainly along one edge, a bifacial point was progressively shaped from both sides to create a thinner and more symmetrical implement.

The pointed end could concentrate force during cutting or impact, while the sharpened lateral margins provided effective working edges. The lower portion may have been held directly, fitted into a handle or attached to a wooden shaft or foreshaft.

Hafting could involve bindings made from sinew, rawhide or plant fibre. Natural resin, pitch or another adhesive material might also be used to reinforce the connection between the stone and its organic mounting.

A bifacial point might be used as a spear or dart component, particularly where its dimensions provided sufficient strength for a larger projectile. Some examples may instead have functioned as knives or as unfinished preforms intended for further refinement.

Obsidian Geology and Volcanic Origin

Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass formed when silica-rich molten rock cools so rapidly that mineral crystals cannot grow. The resulting material has a dense, glassy internal structure rather than the visible crystalline texture found in many other rocks.

Most obsidian appears black, dark grey or deep brown, although thinner edges may be translucent when held against a strong light. Some geological varieties contain reddish tones, pale inclusions, flow banding, microscopic bubbles or reflective mineral particles.

Obsidian differs fundamentally from sedimentary tool stones such as chert and flint. While chert forms through silica-related processes within sedimentary deposits, obsidian is produced directly by volcanic activity.

Its smooth internal structure allows it to break through conchoidal fracture. This creates curved fracture surfaces and exceptionally sharp edges, making obsidian one of the most effective natural materials available for prehistoric cutting tools and projectile points.

Why Obsidian Was Highly Valued

Freshly fractured obsidian can produce an edge finer than that of many manufactured metal blades. Indigenous craftspeople recognised this quality and selected the material for points, knives, cutting flakes and specialised tools.

Obsidian is highly workable, but it is also relatively brittle. Successful manufacture required the stone worker to balance thinness and sharpness against the need to retain sufficient strength. An uncontrolled strike could snap the point or detach a flake that was too large.

Natural obsidian occurs only in regions with suitable volcanic geology. As a result, high-quality material could be transported over considerable distances or exchanged between communities.

Archaeologists can sometimes identify the original volcanic source of an obsidian artefact through geochemical analysis. Individual obsidian deposits possess characteristic combinations of trace elements, allowing researchers to investigate trade, travel and interaction across ancient landscapes.

Traditional Bifacial Stone-Knapping

The manufacture of an obsidian bifacial point began with the selection of a suitable nodule, fragment or large flake. The raw material needed to be large enough for the intended tool and free from major inclusions or cracks.

Initial reduction was normally carried out through percussion flaking. A hammerstone or a softer billet made from antler, bone or dense wood could be used to detach larger flakes and establish the basic outline.

The developing piece was then worked alternately from both faces. Carefully directed flakes travelled across the surface, reducing thickness and creating a lenticular or flattened cross-section. The maker had to prepare suitable platforms and control the angle and force of every removal.

Pressure flaking could be used during the finishing stages. A pointed antler tine, bone implement or similar tool was pressed against the margin to detach smaller flakes. This technique allowed the craftsperson to refine the tip, straighten the edges and improve the overall symmetry.

The visible flake scars and rippled fracture surfaces preserve a physical record of this manufacturing sequence. Each removal represents a deliberate action rather than natural breakage.

Possible Use as a Projectile Point or Knife

A completed bifacial point could be attached to a shaft and used as part of a hunting weapon. Depending on its size and weight, it might serve as a spear point, throwing-dart point or another form of projectile tip.

The pointed end concentrated impact energy, while the sharp obsidian margins increased cutting efficiency. A secure haft was essential to keep the stone correctly aligned and prevent movement during use.

Bifacial points could also function as cutting tools. When fitted into a short handle, an obsidian point or blade would be highly effective for processing meat, hides, plant fibres and other materials.

Damaged tools were often repaired rather than discarded immediately. A broken tip could be reshaped, and worn edges could be renewed through further pressure flaking. Repeated maintenance sometimes altered the original form, gradually making the point shorter, narrower or less symmetrical.

Obsidian Resources in the United States

Obsidian occurs in several volcanic regions of the western United States, including areas of California, Oregon, Idaho, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico and Wyoming. These geological sources supplied raw material for Indigenous stone-tool production over long periods.

Some obsidian was collected directly from exposed lava flows or volcanic domes. It could also be obtained as weathered fragments from slopes, stream deposits and secondary gravel beds.

Because the material was limited to particular geological zones, obsidian artefacts found far from their source provide evidence of movement and exchange. Raw blocks, prepared blanks and completed tools could all pass between individuals or communities.

This relationship between geological source and human transport makes obsidian particularly valuable in archaeological research. A single worked point may preserve information about craftsmanship, resource selection and wider social connections.

Archaeological and Historical Significance

Obsidian bifacial points demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of raw materials and fracture mechanics. The maker needed to recognise suitable stone, control the direction of each flake and maintain the intended form throughout production.

The artefact also represents a composite technology. The surviving stone point may once have been combined with a wooden shaft or handle, organic bindings and adhesive. Those materials usually decay, leaving the durable obsidian element as the principal surviving evidence.

Every flake scar reflects a decision made by the original craftsperson. The finished form embodies practical knowledge acquired through observation, experience and the transmission of skills between generations.

The natural glassy appearance of obsidian also gives the specimen strong visual appeal. Its reflective surfaces connect ancient volcanic activity with deliberate human workmanship, making it suitable for both archaeological and geological collections.
