Genuine Ogyginus corndensis Fossil Trilobite from Wales

An authentic Ogyginus corndensis fossil trilobite from the Llanvirn Series of the Ordovician Period, recovered from Upper Gilwern Quarry, Wales, United Kingdom. This exceptional prehistoric arthropod fossil dates to approximately 460 million years ago and represents one of the classic trilobite species associated with the ancient marine environments of Ordovician Britain.

This fossil is a genuine specimen and includes a Certificate of Authenticity lifetime guarantee generic card. The photographs show the exact specimen you will receive. Full sizing please see photo.

Your specimen was discovered by our own team members, Alister and Alison, and has been carefully cleaned, prepped and treated by Alison to preserve the natural fossil detail and integrity of the surrounding rock matrix.

About Ogyginus corndensis

Ogyginus corndensis is an extinct species of trilobite belonging to the Order Asaphida and Family Asaphidae, a highly successful group of marine arthropods that thrived throughout the Ordovician seas.

Trilobites were among the earliest complex marine animals and dominated ancient ocean ecosystems for hundreds of millions of years before eventually becoming extinct at the end of the Permian Period. Their segmented exoskeletons, compound eyes and distinctive body structure make them some of the most recognisable fossils in the world.

Ogyginus corndensis is especially noted for its broad flattened body, crescent-shaped cephalon and well-defined thoracic segmentation. The species possessed a streamlined exoskeleton suited to life on or just above the ancient seabed. Its relatively smooth morphology and large size compared to some trilobites make it particularly attractive to collectors.

Like many trilobites, Ogyginus likely fed on organic material within marine sediments and may have been capable of partial burrowing or scavenging across the sea floor.

Geological Age and Llanvirn Series

This specimen originates from the Llanvirn Series of the Ordovician Period, a geological interval representing a time when Wales lay beneath warm shallow seas rich in marine biodiversity.

During the Ordovician, the region that is now Wales was situated in a marine environment dominated by mud-rich sea floors, volcanic activity and thriving marine ecosystems populated by trilobites, brachiopods, graptolites and early cephalopods.

The rocks of Upper Gilwern Quarry are renowned among palaeontologists and fossil collectors for producing exceptionally preserved trilobites and other marine fossils from this important period in Earth’s history.

The fine sedimentary conditions within these ancient marine deposits allowed delicate fossil details to survive for hundreds of millions of years, preserving the remarkable anatomy of these prehistoric arthropods.

Fossil Preservation and Morphological Detail

This genuine Ogyginus corndensis trilobite has been professionally prepared to reveal the natural anatomical detail while preserving the integrity of the surrounding matrix. Depending on preservation, visible features may include the cephalon, thoracic segments, pygidium and characteristic exoskeletal structure.

Each trilobite fossil from this locality is naturally unique, displaying variations in preservation, mineralisation and rock matrix colouration formed during fossilisation over immense geological time.

No replicas or casts are involved. The fossil shown in the photographs is the exact specimen you will receive.

The careful preparation by Alison ensures the trilobite remains stable and suitable for long-term collecting, display and study.

A Classic Welsh Trilobite Fossil

Welsh Ordovician trilobites are highly respected among collectors due to their age, scientific importance and beautiful preservation. Specimens from Upper Gilwern Quarry are particularly desirable because of the quality of fossil material historically recovered from the locality.

This specimen is ideal for:

  • Fossil collectors
  • Trilobite collections
  • Ordovician fossil collections
  • British fossil collections
  • Educational displays
  • Geological study collections
  • Natural history enthusiasts
  • Palaeontology collections

The distinctive segmented anatomy and immense geological age make trilobites among the most fascinating fossils available to collectors.
