The Old Red Sandstone represents sediments deposited in large freshwater lakes, rivers, and floodplains that developed within a vast continental basin. In Orkney, these sediments formed part of a large lake system often referred to as Lake Orcadie.

Fine-grained lakebed muds periodically settled to the bottom of these lakes, creating laminated sediment layers capable of preserving delicate fish remains with remarkable clarity. Sudden burial events or anoxic bottom waters helped prevent decay and scavenging, allowing fish skeletons to remain intact as fossils.

These conditions produced some of the most famous Devonian fish fossils in the world, making Orkney a globally significant site for vertebrate palaeontology.

Osteolepis macrolepidotus was a medium-sized freshwater lobe-finned fish characterised by its thick bony scales and robust body form. The name Osteolepis translates roughly to “bony scale,” reflecting the heavily armoured scales that protected the fish.

The body was covered with large rhomboidal ganoid scales composed of thick bone and enamel-like tissue. These scales formed a protective armour that helped shield the fish from predators.

One of the most significant anatomical features of Osteolepis is the structure of its paired fins. Unlike the ray-finned fishes that dominate modern oceans, lobe-finned fishes possessed fleshy, muscular fins supported by strong internal bones. These bones share structural similarities with the limb bones of early tetrapods, making these fishes crucial to understanding vertebrate evolution.
