This listing features a genuine fossilised shark tooth from the species Otodus obliquus, one of the earliest known relatives of the Megalodon. This fossil originates from the phosphate deposits of Oued Zem, near Khouribga in Morocco, dating back to the Eocene Epoch, approximately 56–33 million years ago.

Palaeontology & Geological Context:

Otodus obliquus belongs to the Family Otodontidae, Order Lamniformes, and represents a lineage of large predatory mackerel sharks. The teeth are characterised by large triangular crowns with fine serrations (in later forms), prominent cusplets on either side, and a robust root structure. These teeth were ideal for grasping and slicing through the flesh of bony fish and other marine animals.

  • Morphology Features: Broad, triangular crown with a smooth cutting edge, distinct lateral cusplets, and a thick root.
  • Notable: Otodus obliquus is a direct ancestor of the famous Megalodon and is a keystone genus in shark evolutionary history.
  • Depositional Zone: Khouribga phosphates are part of the Ouled Abdoun Basin, a world-renowned vertebrate fossil site.
