Description

Oxycerites aspidoides Ammonite Fossil – Middle Jurassic, Upper Bajocian, Calvados, Normandy, France

This genuine Oxycerites aspidoides ammonite fossil is a carefully chosen Middle Jurassic specimen from Calvados, Normandy, France. Dating to the Upper Bajocian Stage of the Middle Jurassic, this fossil represents an attractive and scientifically interesting ammonite from the warm marine environments that once covered parts of northern France during the Jurassic Period.

The fossil shown in the photographs is the actual specimen you will receive. Full sizing please see photo. This specimen is supplied with a Certificate of Authenticity lifetime guarantee generic card, confirming that it is a genuine fossil suitable for collectors, educational use, geology displays, natural history cabinets, ammonite collections, and fossil gift presentation.

Fossil Type and Species

This specimen is identified as Oxycerites aspidoides, a Jurassic ammonite belonging to the order Ammonitida. Ammonites were extinct marine cephalopods related to modern squid, cuttlefish, and nautilus. They possessed coiled, chambered shells divided internally into buoyancy chambers, allowing the living animal to control its position within the water column.

Oxycerites is a distinctive ammonite genus known from Middle Jurassic marine deposits. Many species assigned to this group are recognised by their compressed shell form, smooth to finely ornamented whorls, and elegant involute coiling, where later shell whorls partly cover earlier ones. These features give Oxycerites ammonites a refined, tightly coiled appearance that is especially appealing to collectors of classic European Jurassic fossils.

Geological Age and Jurassic Context

This fossil dates to the Upper Bajocian, part of the Middle Jurassic, approximately 168 million years old. The Bajocian Stage was a time of extensive shallow seas across much of Europe, including areas that are now France and southern England. These seas supported a rich marine ecosystem of ammonites, belemnites, bivalves, brachiopods, gastropods, echinoids, corals, and other invertebrates.

Ammonites such as Oxycerites are especially important in palaeontology because they evolved rapidly and spread widely through Jurassic seas. This makes them useful index fossils for dating and correlating rock layers. A fossil identified to species level, such as Oxycerites aspidoides, has added collecting interest because it can be placed more precisely within the Middle Jurassic ammonite record.

Location – Calvados, Normandy, France

Calvados in Normandy is well known for its Jurassic geology and fossil-bearing marine deposits. The region forms part of northern France’s important Mesozoic outcrops, where Jurassic strata preserve evidence of ancient seas along the margins of the Paris Basin. Fossils from Normandy are valued by collectors for their classic European provenance and their connection to historically important Jurassic fossil localities.

During the Middle Jurassic, the Calvados area was part of a shallow marine setting where carbonate sediments, shell debris, and fine marine muds accumulated on the sea floor. These conditions allowed ammonite shells and other marine remains to become buried and preserved over millions of years. This Oxycerites aspidoides ammonite is therefore a genuine remnant of the Jurassic seas that once covered Normandy.

Morphology and Collecting Interest

Oxycerites ammonites typically display a compact, elegant shell form with rounded to compressed whorls and a neat spiral profile. Depending on preservation, specimens may show subtle ribbing, fine growth lines, smooth shell areas, whorl overlap, and traces of the original chambered construction. These features reflect the ammonite’s growth through life and help distinguish it from more strongly ribbed Jurassic ammonite groups.

Oxycerites aspidoides is a desirable fossil for collectors who appreciate named ammonite species, European Jurassic fossils, French fossils, Middle Jurassic cephalopods, and display-quality natural history specimens. Its Upper Bajocian age, Normandy provenance, and species-level identification make it a strong addition to any fossil collection, particularly for those specialising in ammonites from the Jurassic seas of Europe.

Authenticity and Display

All of our fossils are 100% genuine specimens and come with a Certificate of Authenticity. This Oxycerites aspidoides ammonite has been carefully selected for its geological interest, display appeal, and classic French Jurassic provenance. The photograph shows the actual specimen you will receive, so buyers can purchase with confidence knowing the fossil pictured is the fossil supplied.
