Geological Setting – Black Ven Marls, Lower Lias, Early Jurassic
This ammonite originates from the renowned Black Ven Marls, part of the Lower Lias Group, dating to approximately 190–200 million years ago during the Early Jurassic.
At that time, Dorset lay beneath a warm tropical sea rich in marine life, including ammonites, belemnites, fish, crustaceans, and large marine reptiles such as ichthyosaurs. Fine marls and shales accumulated on the seabed, rapidly burying shells and creating ideal conditions for fossil preservation.
Stonebarrow Cliff and Charmouth remain internationally important fossil localities, producing some of the finest ammonites in Europe, including spectacular pyritised examples like this.
Fossil Species – Oxynoticeras Ammonite
Oxynoticeras is a classic Early Jurassic ammonite genus within the subclass Ammonoidea, class Cephalopoda. These marine predators were close relatives of modern squid and cuttlefish, inhabiting Jurassic seas in vast numbers.
Oxynoticeras is known for its distinctive morphology:
- Sharp, compressed whorl profile
- Strong ribbing and keel development
- Streamlined shell form adapted for efficient swimming
This genus is especially associated with Lower Jurassic biostratigraphy and is an important index fossil used for correlating marine strata.
Golden Pyrite Preservation – Unique Natural Beauty
One of the most exceptional aspects of this specimen is its natural golden pyrite mineralisation. Pyrite replacement occurs when iron and sulphur minerals crystallise within the shell during fossilisation, producing a brilliant metallic sheen.
Golden pyrite ammonites from Lyme Regis are particularly prized because:
- They are visually stunning and rare in high quality
- The mineralisation enhances shell detail
- Each specimen is completely unique
This fossil makes an outstanding display piece, combining scientific significance with remarkable natural beauty.
