Ammonites are one of the most recognisable fossils around, this is due to their familiar spiral shape shell, reminiscent of what we know as a snail shell, though these creatures are not related to snails at all! They were marine animals, present between 240 – 65 million years ago, who had a coiled external shell similar to that of the modern nautilus, and although they resembled a modern day nautilus, these molluscs are more closely related to living coleoids (i.e. octopuses, squid, and cuttlefish!)

This stunningly beautiful Ammonite has been sliced in half and polished to expose the amazing colourful chambers inside the fossil.

ACTUAL AS SEEN: The image shows the EXACT specimen you will receive. The specimen has been carefully hand selected and photographed. Measurements are as accurate as possible, though be aware measuring precise dimensions can be difficult from irregular shaped items. Whilst we portray colours as close to life-like as we can, colours will vary if taken in sunlight, indoors, from monitor to monitor and device to device. Once this specimen is sold, we will update this listing with new similar selected item, with a new photo and dimensions.

Description

Available now is a stunning cut and polished ammonite fossil pair from the Cretaceous Period, dating to approximately 100–65 million years ago. These exceptional fossils were discovered in the fossil-rich region of Madagascar, a locality celebrated for producing some of the most beautiful and well-preserved ammonites in the world.

This specimen has been sliced in half and professionally polished, revealing the breathtaking internal chamber structure of this ancient marine cephalopod. The interior displays intricate calcite crystal formations and natural coloration, with golden browns, earthy tones, and sometimes even shimmering hues depending on mineralisation. Together, the two halves form a perfect mirror-image fossil pair, ideal for collectors, decorators, and natural history enthusiasts.

Geological and Species Information:

  • Specimen: Ammonite (cut & polished matched pair)

  • Age: Cretaceous Period (~100–65 million years ago)

  • Location: Madagascar

  • Group: Mollusca – Class: Cephalopoda – Subclass: Ammonoidea

  • Scale Cube = 1cm – Please see photo for actual size

Ammonites were marine molluscs that lived in Earth’s oceans for over 300 million years, from the Devonian to the end of the Cretaceous. Their extinction coincided with the same mass extinction event that ended the age of the dinosaurs. Despite their resemblance to snails due to their coiled shells, ammonites were not gastropods. Instead, they belonged to the cephalopod group, making them more closely related to modern-day squid, octopuses, and cuttlefish.

Their shells featured multiple chambers, which were used to control buoyancy—much like submarines. When polished, these chambers are revealed in dazzling detail, showing the complex internal architecture that helped these creatures thrive in prehistoric seas.

Why This Fossil Pair is Special:

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
