Description
Palaeocyclus fletcheri Fossil Coral – Wenlockian, Silurian – Shadwell Quarry, Shropshire, UK
About the Fossil:
This well-preserved Palaeocyclus fletcheri fossil coral originates from the Wenlockian stage of the Silurian period (~430-423 million years ago) and was discovered at Shadwell Quarry, Shropshire, United Kingdom. Palaeocyclus is an extinct genus of rugose corals, also known as horn corals, which lived in ancient marine environments when Earth’s oceans were teeming with early marine life.
These corals thrived in Silurian reef ecosystems, forming part of extensive coral reefs that supported a diverse array of marine organisms. Their fossilized remains provide valuable insights into ancient marine biodiversity and paleoenvironmental conditions during one of the earliest periods of complex marine life.
