The Palaeolithic, commonly called the Old Stone Age or Early Stone Age, represents the earliest and longest phase of human technological history. In Britain, this immense period included repeated cycles of colder and warmer climate, changing river systems and the occupation of the landscape by different early human populations.

Large cutting tools known as hand axes are among the most characteristic artefacts of the Lower Palaeolithic. They are frequently associated with Acheulean stone-working traditions and were produced over an exceptionally long period by early humans, including Homo heidelbergensis and related populations.

The term “hand axe” describes the artefact’s general form and manufacture rather than proving that it was used only as an axe. Unlike later metal axes, these tools usually lack a haft or handle. The user held the thicker portion directly, leaving one or more sharpened margins available for working.

Flint Material and Geological Origin

Flint is a hard, silica-rich material that commonly forms as nodules or bands within chalk and other sedimentary deposits. It is composed predominantly of microscopic crystalline silica and has a dense, fine-grained structure.

Freshly broken flint fractures conchoidally, producing curved surfaces and potentially sharp edges. This predictable fracture made it one of the most important raw materials used by prehistoric communities in Britain. A skilled toolmaker could control the direction and size of removals by carefully selecting where and how to strike the stone.

Flint can occur in shades of grey, black, brown, cream or mottled combinations. Prolonged exposure to soil, water and changing environmental conditions may alter the outer surface, creating lighter patination, staining or weathered textures. Palaeolithic hand axes were commonly created through a process known as percussion flaking. The maker selected a suitable flint nodule, cobble or large flake and struck it with a hammerstone or another percussor. Each controlled blow detached a flake, leaving a negative scar on the tool’s surface.

Larger, heavier blows were often used during the early shaping process, while smaller removals could refine the edges and improve symmetry.

Cortex is the weathered outer surface of the original flint nodule. Toolmakers sometimes left a cortical area in place to provide a comfortable grip or because further thinning was unnecessary.

Any asymmetry can reflect the shape of the original raw material, the maker’s technique, the intended function or later resharpening. Palaeolithic tools were practical objects, and their final forms could balance efficient production with the need for a strong, durable working edge.

Hand axes occur in several broad shapes, including ovate, pointed, cordate and elongated forms. Many possess a thicker central or basal area that could be held securely, together with thinner worked margins.

These implements are often described as multipurpose tools. Their potential uses included butchering animals, cutting meat, separating joints, removing hides, chopping plant material, woodworking and breaking or scraping tough substances. The exact use of an individual artefact can only be established through detailed functional study, including microscopic analysis of edge wear and residues.
