£36.00

This listing features a rare and authentic Paracidaris florigemma fossil spine, a superb example of a regular echinoid (sea urchin) spine from the Oxfordian Stage of the Late Jurassic Period (approximately 163 to 157 million years ago). This fossil was sourced from the highly fossiliferous marine beds of Reuschente, Switzerland.

Geology & Origin:

Reuschente’s marine sediments were laid down in a shallow tropical sea during the Oxfordian age. This environment was home to a wide range of echinoid species, including Paracidaris florigemma. The spines of these echinoids, which were used for movement and protection, were occasionally buried intact in fine carbonate sediments. Today, these deposits yield beautifully preserved fossil echinoid spines.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
