PARASPIDOCERAS MAMMILANUM Fossil Ammonite Middle Oxfordian Jurassic Le Vanneau Deux-Sevres France Authentic Specimen

£12.00

This listing features an exquisite and authentic fossil ammonite of Paraspidoceras mammilanum, collected from Le Vanneau, Deux-Sèvres, France, in rocks dating to the Middle Oxfordian Stage of the Upper Jurassic Period (~161 to 157 million years ago). The specimen comes with a Certificate of Authenticity and the photos show the actual fossil you will receive.

Paraspidoceras mammilanum is a member of the:

  • Order: Ammonitida
  • Superfamily: Perisphinctoidea
  • Family: Aspidoceratidae

This genus and species are known for their elaborate ornamentation and are considered excellent biostratigraphic markers for Middle Oxfordian marine deposits. Fossils from this region were originally described by early French paleontologists studying ammonite zonation across Western Europe.

The rocks at Le Vanneau, in the Deux-Sèvres department of France, are part of well-documented Oxfordian marine deposits representing a warm, shallow epicontinental sea, which supported diverse invertebrate faunas, especially ammonites.

Morphology Features:

  • Involute, thick discoidal shell
  • Strong radial ribbing with characteristic tubercles (mammillate nodes) on the flanks
  • Wide whorl section with robust sculpturing
  • Slightly constricted apertures and ornate ventral keel

These features make Paraspidoceras one of the more visually striking genera within Aspidoceratidae, and the species mammilanum in particular is sought after for its distinctive ornamentation.

Specimen Information:

  • Species: Paraspidoceras mammilanum
  • Fossil Type: Ammonite Shell (internal mould/preserved shell)
  • Geological Stage: Middle Oxfordian (Upper Jurassic)
  • Location: Le Vanneau, Deux-Sèvres, France
  • Depositional Environment: Shallow marine carbonate shelf
  • Order: Ammonitida
  • Family: Aspidoceratidae

This ammonite is a stunning addition for collectors of Jurassic marine fossils, paleontology educators, or anyone with an appreciation for natural history and prehistoric marine life.

Scale rule cubes/squares = 1cm. Please refer to the photo for full sizing and detail.

All of our Fossils are 100% Genuine Specimens & come with a Certificate of Authenticity.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
