Bathonian Geological Age
The Bathonian Stage spans part of the Middle Jurassic, roughly 168 to 166 million years ago. At that time, much of central Europe consisted of shallow seas, islands and coastal environments shaped by fluctuating sea levels. Warm marine waters supported diverse ammonite communities alongside bivalves, brachiopods, belemnites and marine reptiles. Sediments accumulating on the seabed buried shells and other remains, creating the conditions necessary for fossilisation.
Germany contains numerous classic Jurassic fossil localities and has played a major role in the scientific study of ammonites. A specimen with German provenance therefore has both display value and meaningful geological context. Its preservation reflects a long sequence of burial, compaction, mineralisation, uplift and eventual exposure.
Species and Morphology
Parkinsonia pachypleura belongs to the Ammonoidea, an extinct subclass of marine cephalopods related to living squid, cuttlefish, octopus and nautilus. An ammonite shell was divided by septa into internal chambers. The animal occupied the final body chamber, while the other chambers contributed to buoyancy control through a connecting siphuncle.
Parkinsonia is associated with the family Parkinsoniidae and the order Ammonitida. The genus is well known for evolute coiling, in which much of the earlier whorls remains visible, together with strong ribs that commonly divide or branch across the shell. The name pachypleura refers to robust flank or rib development. Depending on preservation, this specimen may show ribbing, whorl curvature, the umbilical region and traces of the original shell or its internal mould.
Ammonites evolved rapidly and spread widely through Jurassic seas. Because characteristic species appeared during relatively restricted intervals, they are important index fossils used to correlate marine rock layers. Parkinsonia is particularly associated with Middle Jurassic stratigraphy and contributes to the recognition and comparison of Bajocian and Bathonian successions in Europe.
