Description
This exquisite Pentacrinites crinoid star slab fossil comes from the Belemnite Marls of Stonebarrow Cliff, located along the Jurassic Coast in Charmouth, Lyme Regis, Dorset, UK. Dating back to the Lower Lias period of the Jurassic, approximately 190 million years ago, Pentacrinites were marine animals belonging to the Crinoidea class, related to modern sea lilies. Their star-shaped fossilized remains are both scientifically significant and visually striking, making this specimen a must-have for fossil enthusiasts and collectors.
Crinoids, often referred to as “sea lilies,” were suspension feeders that anchored themselves to the seafloor or drifted along the currents in prehistoric seas. The detailed preservation of this crinoid star fossil showcases the intricate, star-like structure of Pentacrinites, making it a fascinating glimpse into the ancient marine ecosystems of the Jurassic period.
