This fossil is a genuine specimen and includes a Certificate of Authenticity lifetime guarantee generic card, ensuring lasting confidence in provenance and collectability.

Geological Formation and Geological Age

This specimen originates from the Lower Lias Group, deposited during the Early Jurassic Period, approximately 199–191 million years ago, within the Sinemurian Stage. The Black Ven Marls consist of fine-grained marine mudstones and marls laid down in a shallow epicontinental sea that covered much of southern Britain. These deposits are internationally significant for their exceptional preservation of marine fossils and have played a central role in the study of Early Jurassic stratigraphy and palaeoenvironments.

Fossil Type, Species, and Scientific Context

Pentacrinites is a genus of stalked crinoid, an echinoderm related to modern sea lilies and feather stars. It belongs to the Order Isocrinida, Family Isocrinidae, and is one of the most iconic crinoids of the Lower Jurassic. Pentacrinites is particularly notable for forming dense colonies, often attached to floating driftwood or firm substrates, allowing it to colonise wide areas of the Jurassic seafloor. Fossil slabs preserving Pentacrinites are classic and highly sought-after examples of Jurassic marine life.

Morphology and Notable Features

This large slab preserves numerous Pentacrinites columnals and stem fragments, typically appearing as circular to star-shaped segments arranged in linear or radiating patterns. Central lumens are often visible within individual columnals, along with articulation surfaces that show how the segments connected in life. The repetition of these skeletal elements creates a distinctive and attractive natural pattern across the slab, clearly illustrating crinoid anatomy, growth, and skeletal construction.

Depositional Environment

During the Early Jurassic, the Black Ven and Charmouth area lay beneath a warm, shallow marine environment with relatively calm conditions and abundant nutrients. Crinoids flourished in these waters, forming extensive benthic communities. Storm events or shifts in sea conditions could cause colonies to break apart, with skeletal material settling onto the sea floor. Rapid burial by fine sediments, combined with periods of low oxygen, limited decay and scavenging, allowing dense accumulations of crinoid material to be preserved within the Black Ven Marls.

Collecting, Display, and Educational Value

This large Pentacrinites crinoid fossil slab is ideal for serious fossil collectors, museums, educational institutions, or statement interior display. Its substantial size, dense fossil content, classic British provenance, and clear geological context make it both scientifically informative and visually impressive. Large crinoid slabs from Lyme Regis are increasingly scarce and highly sought after due to their ability to vividly illustrate Jurassic sea-floor ecosystems. Each specimen we offer is individually selected, ensuring you receive an authentic and carefully curated piece of Early Jurassic marine history from one of the world’s most important fossil coastlines.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
