A Genuine Middle Jurassic Fossil from Normandy

This authentic ammonite fossil is identified as Perisphinctes cf. polysphinctus and comes from Ranville in Normandy, France. Lower Bathonian Geology

The Bathonian was a stage of the Middle Jurassic lasting from approximately 168.2 to 165.3 million years ago. During the Lower Bathonian, much of northwestern Europe was influenced by warm shallow seas. Limestone, marl and other marine sediments accumulated across shelves and basins, preserving the remains of ammonites, bivalves, brachiopods, echinoids and other organisms. These rocks now provide a record of changing Jurassic environments and biological communities.

Ammonite fossils are particularly important in marine stratigraphy because many lineages evolved rapidly and spread over broad geographical areas. Their changing species and shell forms help palaeontologists compare sedimentary layers and refine geological ages. A specimen with recorded locality and stage information therefore retains meaningful scientific context beyond its visual appeal.

Ranville and Normandy Provenance

These features make perisphinctid ammonites attractive to collectors and informative for palaeontologists studying shell development, variation and Jurassic biostratigraphy.

Life of the Ammonite

Ammonites were extinct marine cephalopods related to modern squid, cuttlefish and nautiluses. The intricate lines where septa met the outer shell, called sutures, are important features used in ammonite identification.
