Peronoceras andraei ammonite fossil – upper lias, lower jurassic – whitby, north yorkshire, uk – alice purnell collection

Original price was: £72.00.Current price is: £64.80.

This is a genuine fossil specimen of Peronoceras andraei, a striking ammonite species from the Upper Lias, dating to the Lower Jurassic period, approximately 180 million years ago. It was unearthed from the renowned fossil beds near Whitby, North Yorkshire, UK — a world-famous location on the Jurassic Coast known for yielding incredibly well-preserved ammonites and marine fossils.

Peronoceras andraei is recognised for its pronounced ribbing and robust shell structure, with spines or tubercles along its flanks — features that made it a formidable swimmer in ancient Jurassic seas. Ammonites were cephalopods, closely related to modern squids, cuttlefish, and octopuses. They thrived in the open marine environments of the Jurassic and evolved rapidly, making them ideal biostratigraphic indicators for geologists.

This particular specimen comes from the historic Alice Purnell Collection and has been expertly discovered by our team members Alister and Alison, then professionally cleaned, prepped, and treated by Alison. It represents a beautiful example of Yorkshire’s palaeontological heritage and would be a prized addition to any fossil collection or natural history display.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
