**Eifelian Geology of Tahrajat**

Tahrajat lies within the fossil-rich region of south-eastern Morocco, where extensive Devonian sedimentary rocks preserve an extraordinary record of ancient marine life. During the Eifelian, this region lay beneath a warm sea along the northern margin of the ancient continent Gondwana. Carbonate mud and other sediments accumulated across the seabed, supporting communities of trilobites, brachiopods, corals, crinoids, molluscs and cephalopods.

The Taboumakhlouf Formation records part of this marine environment. After the trilobites died, their mineralised exoskeletons became buried in seabed sediment. Burial helped protect the remains while compaction, mineral replacement and chemical alteration gradually transformed the sediment into rock. Later uplift and erosion exposed the fossil-bearing layers, allowing the specimen to be discovered and carefully prepared from its matrix.

Phacops is a phacopid trilobite famous for prominent schizochroal compound eyes formed from comparatively large calcite lenses. Its broad cephalon, raised glabella and clearly segmented thorax create a robust and immediately recognisable appearance. Articulation allowed defensive enrolment, bringing the head and tail shields together to protect the softer underside.

Gerastos belongs to the proetid group of trilobites and typically shows a more compact form with a well-defined axial region. Proetids were an exceptionally successful lineage that survived far longer than most trilobite orders. Displayed beside Phacops, Gerastos offers a useful comparison of head shape, body proportions, segmentation and evolutionary design.
