Phlyseogrammoceras dispansum Ammonite Fossil | Toarcian, Jurassic | Ravenscar Yorkshire UK | Alice Purnell Collection

£36.00

Fossil Type & Species:

This listing features a genuine ammonite fossil of Phlyseogrammoceras dispansum, a distinctive and scientifically important ammonite species from the Toarcian Stage of the Lower Jurassic. This well-preserved specimen was collected from the Ravenscar area of North Yorkshire, United Kingdom, and forms part of the respected Alice Purnell Collection, known for rare, high-quality British fossils.

Geological Formation & Insight:

Phlyseogrammoceras is a genus within the family Hildoceratidae, and dispansum is a well-known species used in biostratigraphy to define the dispansum Subzone within the bifrons Zone of the Toarcian. It is easily recognised by its evolute, moderately compressed shell, well-defined ribbing, and often deep umbilicus.

This specimen comes from Lower Jurassic marine deposits, dated to approximately 183–180 million years ago, exposed along the cliffs near Ravenscar on the Yorkshire Coast, part of the famous Jurassic Coastline of northern England. The strata here belong to the Whitby Mudstone Formation, a fine-grained marine sediment ideal for fossil preservation.

The area was once a shallow sea rich in marine life, and the muds that accumulated on the seafloor created an anoxic environment, limiting decay and allowing excellent fossilisation. As a result, ammonites from Ravenscar often display exquisite shell detail, including preserved ribbing and suture lines.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
