Description
PHYLLOCERAS AMMONITE FOSSIL
This genuine Phylloceras sp. ammonite is a distinctive Jurassic fossil from Morocco. Its natural form preserves the elegant coiled shell associated with ammonites, an extinct group of marine cephalopods that inhabited prehistoric seas for millions of years. The photographs show the actual specimen you will receive, allowing you to examine its shape, surface detail and individual character before purchasing.
SPECIES AND CLASSIFICATION
Phylloceras is an ammonite genus belonging to the family Phylloceratidae and the order Ammonitida. Phylloceratid ammonites are especially recognised for their generally compact, involute shells and their highly intricate suture patterns. These sutures mark the joins between the internal chamber walls and the outer shell. In well-preserved examples they can resemble branching leaves, a feature reflected in the name Phylloceras, which is derived from words meaning leaf and horn.
As the animal grew, it formed a succession of internal chambers. The living ammonite occupied the final outer chamber, while the older chambers helped regulate buoyancy. This chambered shell allowed ammonites to move through the marine water column, making them highly successful inhabitants of ancient oceans.
JURASSIC GEOLOGY
This specimen is recorded as Jurassic in age and originates from Morocco, a country internationally known for its fossil-rich sedimentary rocks. During the Jurassic Period, approximately 201 to 145 million years ago, extensive marine environments covered many regions that are now dry land. Fine sediment accumulated on ancient sea floors and could bury shells after death, allowing mineral-rich groundwater and long geological processes to preserve them as fossils.
Ammonites evolved rapidly and were widely distributed through prehistoric seas. For this reason, different ammonite groups are important to palaeontologists when comparing and dating marine rock layers. Phylloceratid ammonites also represent a long-lived lineage that survived through major changes in Jurassic marine ecosystems.
A NATURAL COLLECTOR’S SPECIMEN
Every fossil is unique. Natural variations, mineral tones, small surface marks and areas of matrix are part of the specimen’s geological history rather than manufactured imperfections. Please study all supplied photographs carefully for the full appearance and sizing of this particular piece.
This Phylloceras ammonite is suitable for a fossil collection, geological display, educational resource or natural-history gift. Its recognisable spiral form and genuine Jurassic origin make it an appealing specimen for both established collectors and anyone beginning to explore palaeontology.
