Geology and Age

This fossil is from the Upper Lias, a historic British geological term commonly associated with Lower Jurassic marine strata. In Yorkshire, Upper Lias sediments are well known for preserving ammonites, belemnites, marine reptiles, bivalves and other sea life from an ancient offshore environment. These beds were deposited in warm Jurassic seas more than 180 million years ago, when Britain lay much farther south than it does today and was covered by shallow to deeper marine waters.

Fossil Type and Species

This specimen is identified as Phylloceras sp., meaning it belongs to the genus Phylloceras, with the exact species left open. Phylloceratid ammonites are typically recognised by their compressed, involute shells, relatively smooth or finely ornamented outer surface, and complex internal suture patterns. The name Phylloceras refers to the leaf-like appearance of the suture lines seen in well-preserved examples, a feature that makes this group especially distinctive in ammonite palaeontology.

Collector Appeal

A Phylloceras ammonite from the Lower Jurassic of Yorkshire is an excellent addition to any fossil collection, educational display, natural history cabinet or geology-themed décor. Its age, British origin and classic ammonite form make it a desirable specimen for collectors of Jurassic fossils, UK fossils, marine fossils and authentic prehistoric display pieces.

Authenticity and Presentation

This is a genuine fossil specimen, not a replica. It includes a Certificate of Authenticity lifetime guarantee generic card for buyer confidence. The fossil has been carefully chosen, and the listing photo shows the actual specimen you will receive, making it suitable for collectors who value individual character, natural preservation and honest presentation.
