It was found in Ilminster, Somerset, UK, a location well known for its remarkable fossil preservation. Phylloceras heterophyllum is characterized by its smooth shell, elegant suture lines, and distinctive coiling, making it a highly sought-after specimen among collectors.
This particular fossil was discovered by our own team members, Alister and Alison, on 03 November 2024, and has been expertly cleaned, prepped, and treated by Alison to highlight its natural features and ensure its longevity.
Phylloceras belonged to a group of ammonites known for their thin, involute shells with intricate suture patterns, indicating a deep-water lifestyle compared to more robust, ribbed ammonites.
