Fossil sponges are fascinating marine fossils because they represent one of the oldest and most enduring groups of animals in Earth history. Unlike ammonites or nautiloids, which were active swimming cephalopods, sponges lived attached to the sea floor and filtered tiny food particles from the surrounding water.
