Plegiocidaris radioles regular echinoid spine fossil oxfordian jurassic zalas poland genuine specimen

£14.40

This listing features a rare and genuine Plegiocidaris radioles fossil spine, a fine example of a regular echinoid (sea urchin) element from the Oxfordian Stage of the Late Jurassic Period (approximately 163 to 157 million years ago). This specimen was recovered from the Jurassic marine layers of Zalas, Poland, a well-known site for Oxfordian echinoderm fossils.

Geology & Origin:

During the Oxfordian stage, the area now known as southern Poland was covered by a shallow marine environment teeming with invertebrate life. Regular echinoids such as Plegiocidaris used their robust spines for both defense and locomotion. These spines occasionally fossilized separately from the test, especially under favourable sedimentary conditions like those in Zalas, resulting in highly collectable and scientifically important specimens.

Fossil Type & Species:

  • Type: Fossil Echinoid Spine (Sea Urchin)
  • Species: Plegiocidaris radioles
  • Preservation: Excellent, retaining surface detail and natural shape

Features:

  • 100% genuine, natural fossil specimen
  • Includes a Certificate of Authenticity
  • Hand-selected for visual quality, preservation, and rarity

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
