Description
Available here is a well-preserved Pleuroceras ammonite fossil, from the Marlstone Rock Formation, part of the Toarcian Stage of the Early Jurassic Period, dating back approximately 182 to 174 million years ago. This fossil was found near Gretton in Gloucestershire, United Kingdom, and forms part of the historic and highly respected Alice Purnell Collection, which includes some of the finest documented fossil specimens from Europe.
Pleuroceras is a genus of extinct ammonite cephalopods, most commonly recognised for their robust, planispiral shells adorned with strong radial ribs and sometimes spines or a keel along the venter. These features made them hydrodynamically stable swimmers in the shallow marine seas that covered parts of the UK during the Early Jurassic.
This particular specimen is preserved in matrix from the Marlstone Rock Formation, a well-known fossiliferous unit consisting of sandy ironstone and calcareous mudstone. The fossil displays excellent shell morphology, with clear ribbing and structural form, making it both a scientific reference specimen and a visual display piece.
Geological Context: The Marlstone Rock Formation is part of the Lias Group and dates to the Early Jurassic (Toarcian). It is rich in ammonites, bivalves, and other marine fauna, deposited in a warm, shallow sea that covered much of southern and central England during the time. The formation is a key biostratigraphic unit and is widely studied for its paleoecological significance.
