Genuine Pleuroceras solare Ammonite Fossil

This listing is for a genuine Pleuroceras solare ammonite fossil from the Lower Jurassic, Upper Pliensbachian, collected from Fresney-le-Puceux, Calvados, Normandy, France. This is a carefully chosen fossil specimen, selected for its natural character, geological interest, and appeal as a classic European Jurassic ammonite. The photograph shows the actual specimen you will receive, allowing you to view the fossil’s preservation, colour, shape, matrix, surface detail, and overall appearance before purchase. This fossil is supplied with a Certificate of Authenticity lifetime guarantee generic card, confirming that it is a genuine specimen.

Fossil Type and Species

Pleuroceras solare is an ammonite, an extinct marine cephalopod related to modern squid, octopus, and cuttlefish. Ammonites lived in coiled, chambered shells and were highly successful predators and scavengers in ancient seas. Their shells were divided internally into buoyancy chambers, while the animal lived in the final body chamber. After death, the empty shell could settle onto the seabed, become buried by sediment, and eventually fossilise over millions of years.

Pleuroceras is one of the distinctive ammonite genera of the Upper Pliensbachian stage of the Early Jurassic. The species name solare is especially evocative, as many Pleuroceras ammonites display a strong radial rib pattern that can resemble rays around the coiled shell. These attractive ribbed forms make Pleuroceras highly collectable among ammonite enthusiasts and natural history collectors.

Lower Jurassic Geology and Age

This ammonite dates from the Lower Jurassic Period, specifically the Upper Pliensbachian Stage, making it approximately 185 million years old. During this time, much of western Europe was covered by shallow epicontinental seas. These warm marine environments supported a rich ecosystem of ammonites, belemnites, bivalves, brachiopods, fish, and marine reptiles.

The sediments that preserved ammonites such as Pleuroceras solare were laid down on ancient sea floors, where fine muds and calcareous deposits gradually accumulated. Burial protected shells from total destruction and allowed mineral-rich groundwater to replace or infill the original shell material. Over geological time, compaction, mineralisation, and natural weathering produced the fossil specimens collected from Jurassic deposits today.

Fresney-le-Puceux, Normandy Fossil Locality

This specimen comes from Fresney-le-Puceux in Calvados, Normandy, France, a locality associated with fossiliferous Jurassic deposits. Normandy is well known for its rich Mesozoic geology, and Jurassic ammonites from the region are valued by collectors for their scientific interest, display quality, and European provenance.

Fossils from Calvados represent marine life from an ancient Jurassic seaway that once covered large areas of what is now northern France. A Pleuroceras solare ammonite from this locality is a genuine piece of prehistoric marine history and a desirable addition to collections focused on French fossils, Jurassic ammonites, European geology, and classic ammonite species.

Shell Form and Natural Features

Pleuroceras ammonites are known for their compact coiled shells and strong ribbing. Many examples show pronounced radial ribs crossing the whorls, often giving the fossil a bold sculptural appearance. These ribs are important morphological features used by palaeontologists and collectors when identifying ammonite species. The shell form reflects the animal’s growth through life, with each new whorl wrapping around the previous one as the ammonite developed.

As a genuine fossil, this specimen may display natural features such as mineral staining, matrix attachment, ancient wear, slight compression, small chips, weathered areas, or partial preservation. These details are typical of authentic fossil material and form part of the specimen’s geological history. The photograph shows the actual fossil being offered, so each natural feature can be seen before purchase.

Collectable Jurassic Ammonite Display Specimen

This Pleuroceras solare ammonite fossil is ideal for fossil collectors, geology students, educational collections, natural history displays, school resources, or anyone interested in genuine Jurassic marine fossils. Its combination of Lower Jurassic age, Upper Pliensbachian geological setting, French locality, and attractive ammonite form makes it a strong display piece for any fossil cabinet.

The fossil comes exactly as shown in the photo and includes a Certificate of Authenticity lifetime guarantee generic card, making it a reliable choice for collectors seeking a genuine Pleuroceras ammonite, French Jurassic fossil, Normandy fossil specimen, or scientifically labelled natural history display piece.
