Description
Fossil Type & Species:
This listing features a genuine ammonite fossil of Pleuroceras spinatum, a striking and scientifically important ammonite species from the Upper Toarcian Stage of the Early Jurassic Period. Collected in Germany, this beautifully preserved fossil is part of the respected Alice Purnell Collection, renowned for curating rare and high-quality specimens with scientific and collector value.
Geological Formation & Insight:
Pleuroceras spinatum is one of the most iconic ammonite species of the Lower Jurassic, known for its highly evolute shell, sharply defined ribbing, and distinctive spines along the outer whorls. These spines may have served hydrodynamic or defensive functions and are a hallmark of the genus Pleuroceras.
This species is found in Upper Toarcian-aged marine sedimentary rocks (~180–178 million years ago). The locality in Germany where this fossil was found is part of the Jurassic sedimentary basins of southern and central Europe, particularly known for their well-preserved ammonite faunas.
During the Toarcian, the area was submerged beneath warm, shallow seas — part of the ancient Tethys Ocean — which supported a highly diverse marine ecosystem. Fine-grained limestone and shale from this environment preserved ammonites in exquisite detail, capturing both their form and ornamentation.
