During the Lower Albian, Madagascar was located along the margins of the Tethys Ocean and submerged beneath warm, shallow marine waters. The fossil beds of Tulear are part of a globally significant sequence used in correlating Albian stratigraphy, often associated with the Douvilleiceras mammillatum ammonite zone in broader global stratigraphic frameworks.
