Polished Cadoceras liskovo Ammonite Fossil – Lower Callovian, Jurassic – Volga, Russia – COA – Alice Purnell Collection

Original price was: £120.00.Current price is: £96.00.

This listing features a rare and beautifully polished Cadoceras liskovo Ammonite Fossil, from the Lower Callovian Stage of the Middle Jurassic, approximately 165 million years ago, discovered in the Volga River region of Russia. This specimen is part of the renowned Alice Purnell Collection.

Cadoceras liskovo is a distinct ammonite species known for its robust, ribbed shell structure with complex suture patterns and coiling. These ammonites were once thriving marine cephalopods, relatives of modern squid and octopuses, and are commonly used as biostratigraphic markers in Jurassic geology due to their rapid evolutionary development and widespread distribution.

The Volga River Basin, particularly in regions such as Saratov and Ulyanovsk, is renowned for its rich Jurassic marine fossil beds. The finely laminated clays and silts of the area allowed for excellent fossil preservation, often revealing spectacular detail in ammonite shells.

This fossil has been expertly cut and polished, revealing the stunning inner chamber structures and mineral patterns of the ammonite. These polished cross-sections are highly sought after by collectors and educators for both their scientific interest and visual appeal.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
