Description

## Polyplectites linguiferus Juvenile Ammonite

This is a genuine juvenile Polyplectites linguiferus ammonite fossil from the famous Inferior Oolite Group at Burton Bradstock, Dorset, England. The exact specimen pictured is the fossil supplied, selected for its natural form, Jurassic provenance and display appeal. Ammonites were extinct marine cephalopods, relatives of living nautiluses, squid and cuttlefish, whose coiled shells are among the most recognisable fossils in the world.

## Middle Jurassic Age

This fossil dates from the Bathonian Stage of the Middle Jurassic, around 168 to 166 million years ago. At that time Dorset lay beneath warm shallow seas, far removed from the landscape seen today. Fine marine sediment accumulated on the seabed and eventually became the fossil-bearing limestones and oolitic rocks of the Inferior Oolite Group. These rocks record a flourishing sea rich in shellfish, echinoids, corals, crustaceans and cephalopods.

## Ammonite Form and Biology

Ammonites built chambered shells. The animal occupied the outer living chamber, while internal chambers helped regulate buoyancy. Their coiled form, ribbing and suture patterns help palaeontologists distinguish species and trace changing marine faunas through geological time. This juvenile example captures an early growth stage, making it an appealing addition alongside larger ammonite specimens. Its compact size and detailed shell form offer a direct, tactile link to ancient marine life.

## Burton Bradstock Provenance

Burton Bradstock is one of the best-known Jurassic Coast localities. The Dorset coast is internationally valued for its long, visible sequence of Mesozoic rocks and its abundance of fossils. A specimen from this area is suitable for a fossil collection, geology display, classroom study piece or thoughtful gift for a collector of natural history. The locality and geological age add important scientific context beyond the beauty of the shell itself.

## Authenticity and Condition

This fossil is a genuine specimen and includes a Certificate of Authenticity lifetime guarantee generic card. Please see the photographs for full sizing, preservation and surface details. The listing photographs show the actual carefully chosen fossil you will receive, not a stock image. Each Jurassic ammonite carries individual mineral texture, weathering and character accumulated through millions of years of burial and preservation. Polyplectites linguiferus combines classic ammonite anatomy, Middle Jurassic age and British Jurassic Coast provenance in one naturally historic specimen.
