Middle Jurassic Bajocian Geology
The Bajocian Age lasted from approximately 170 to 168 million years ago and forms an early part of the Middle Jurassic. During this interval, much of western Europe was covered by warm marine waters. Sediment accumulated across continental shelves and in local basins, eventually forming fossil-bearing limestones, marls, clays and related rocks. Changes in water depth, currents, sediment supply and oxygen levels created varied habitats for marine life.
Ammonites are particularly important to Jurassic geology because their lineages evolved rapidly and many forms spread over broad marine regions. Individual species commonly had limited geological ranges. Palaeontologists can therefore compare ammonite assemblages from different outcrops to correlate strata, recognise biozones and refine the relative ages of marine rocks.
Pontannesia Ammonite
Pontannesia is an extinct ammonite genus within the order Ammonitida. Ammonites were marine cephalopods related to living squid, octopus and nautilus. They carried coiled shells divided internally into chambers. The living animal occupied the outer body chamber, while sealed earlier chambers helped control buoyancy as the shell grew.
The identification sp. means that the fossil can be assigned to the genus Pontannesia while no particular species name is asserted. This is a standard scientific convention that preserves useful taxonomic information without overstating what can be determined from an individual specimen. Identification considers the degree of coiling, whorl proportions, umbilical width, ribbing and the form of the shell’s outer margin.
