Genuine Prehistoric Flint End Scraper

This carefully chosen archaeological artefact is a genuine complete flint end scraper found near Lowestoft in Suffolk, England, UK. It has been recorded with the Portable Antiquities Scheme under reference SWYOR-7810C3 and is broadly dated to approximately 500,000–800 BC, covering a substantial span of British prehistory from the Palaeolithic through to the Bronze Age.

The scraper was manufactured from a complete struck flint flake and preserves evidence of deliberate prehistoric working. End scrapers are recognised by the shaped scraping edge created at the distal end of a flake, normally through a sequence of controlled retouch removals.

Flint End Scraper Artefact Type

An end scraper is a prehistoric stone tool made by modifying the end of a flake or blade to create a strong working edge. The scraper edge is usually rounded, convex or slightly straight and is commonly formed through steep retouch.

Retouch involves removing a series of smaller flakes from the edge of an existing blank. These removals alter the angle of the margin, making it stronger and more suitable for scraping than the exceptionally thin edge of an unmodified flake.

The main body of the flake could be held directly between the fingers and palm. Some scraper forms may also have been fitted into handles made from wood, antler or bone, although such organic components rarely survive in British archaeological conditions.

This complete example retains the original flake form together with the deliberately modified end, allowing the relationship between the blank and the finished implement to be appreciated.

Broad Prehistoric Date Range

The recorded date range of circa 500,000–800 BC reflects the long period during which flint flake tools and end scrapers were produced in Britain. Similar scraping tools occur in Palaeolithic, Mesolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Age archaeological assemblages.

The manufacture of this scraper began with the preparation of a flint core. A prehistoric knapper selected a suitable striking platform and struck the core using a hammerstone or another percussor, detaching the flake that formed the basis of the tool.

A complete flake may preserve a platform at its proximal end and a bulb of percussion beneath the point of impact. Ripples across the ventral surface can indicate how force travelled through the flint when the flake was removed.

The opposite dorsal surface may display negative scars created by earlier removals from the parent core. These features provide evidence of deliberate flint knapping rather than accidental natural fracture.

After producing the flake, the maker modified its distal end through retouch. Small flakes were removed in a controlled sequence to create a steep and durable working margin. The finished scraper combined a comfortable gripping area with an edge capable of withstanding repeated pressure.

Possible Uses of an End Scraper

End scrapers were versatile tools that could be used in a range of prehistoric activities. They are particularly associated with the working of animal hides, where the rounded edge could remove fat, tissue and hair during the preparation of leather.

Prepared hides were valuable materials for clothing, footwear, coverings, bags, containers and shelter components. Scrapers may therefore have played an important role in everyday domestic and craft activities.

Similar tools could also be used to scrape wood, bone, antler or plant material. A steep edge was less likely to snap under pressure than a thin cutting edge, making it suitable for repeated pushing or pulling movements.

The exact function of an individual tool can sometimes be investigated through microscopic use-wear analysis. Repeated contact with hide, wood or other materials may produce characteristic edge rounding, polish and fine striations.

Lowestoft and the Suffolk Landscape

This scraper was found near Lowestoft on the Suffolk coast. East Anglia is an archaeologically important region containing extensive evidence of prehistoric occupation and some of Britain’s most significant early human landscapes.

The geology of Suffolk includes glacial deposits, river gravels, coastal sediments and areas influenced by the underlying Chalk. Flint could be obtained from chalk exposures, gravel deposits, beaches and material transported by glacial or river activity.

The landscape around modern Lowestoft changed considerably throughout prehistory. Sea levels rose and fell, rivers altered course, and land now beneath the North Sea was periodically exposed. During colder phases, the region formed part of a much larger terrestrial landscape connecting Britain with continental Europe.
