Description

This listing offers a beautifully preserved Fossil Shrimp from Madagascar, dating back to the Triassic period (over 200 million years ago). Encased within its natural nodule, this specimen provides an extraordinary glimpse into prehistoric marine life. Every fossil we sell is 100% genuine and includes a Certificate of Authenticity.

Geological Context:
The Triassic period (approx. 252 – 201 million years ago) marked the dawn of the Mesozoic Era, often referred to as the “Age of Reptiles.” During this time, marine ecosystems flourished with early crustaceans, ammonites, and fish. Madagascar, rich in fossil-bearing strata, has yielded some of the finest Triassic specimens, capturing the biodiversity of ancient seas. Fossils preserved in nodules are especially prized for their exceptional detail and protection against erosion.

About Fossil Shrimp:
Shrimp belong to the class Malacostraca, one of the most diverse groups of crustaceans. These ancient relatives of modern shrimp and lobsters had segmented bodies, protective exoskeletons, and delicate appendages used for feeding and swimming. Fossil shrimp are rare due to their fragile bodies, making well-preserved specimens highly collectible.

Key scientific and collector interest points:

Triassic Information

The Triassic Period (252–201 million years ago) marked the beginning of the Mesozoic Era, following the Permian-Triassic mass extinction, the most severe extinction event in Earth's history. The climate was hot and dry, with vast deserts and little polar ice. Life slowly recovered, leading to the rise of the first dinosaurs, pterosaurs (flying reptiles), and early mammals. Reptiles, including large archosaurs (ancestors of crocodiles and dinosaurs), dominated both land and sea. In the oceans, ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs thrived alongside ammonites and early coral reefs. The first true conifers and ginkgo trees spread across the land. The period ended with another mass extinction, paving the way for the Jurassic and the golden age of dinosaurs.
