This is a genuine Procerites laviplex ammonite fossil from the Bathonian Stage of the Middle Jurassic. It was collected at Saint-Benin-d’Azy in Nièvre, France, a locality within a region containing fossil-bearing Jurassic sedimentary rocks. Geological Age and Locality

The Bathonian Stage forms part of the Middle Jurassic and dates to approximately 168 to 166 million years ago. During this interval, extensive areas of what is now France were covered by warm shallow seas. Sediment and carbonate material accumulated on the seabed and sometimes buried ammonite shells before they were destroyed. Over millions of years, compaction, mineral-rich groundwater and geological change preserved those remains as fossils.

About Procerites laviplex

Procerites laviplex is an ammonite associated with Bathonian marine deposits. Ammonites were extinct cephalopods related to modern squid, cuttlefish and nautiluses. Their coiled external shells were divided internally into chambers. The living animal occupied the final chamber, while earlier chambers helped regulate buoyancy in the water.
