Geological Origin – Black Ven Marls, Lower Lias, Early Jurassic

This ammonite originates from the renowned Black Ven Marls, part of the Lower Lias Group, dating to approximately 190–200 million years ago in the Early Jurassic Period.

At that time, Dorset lay beneath a warm shallow sea rich in marine life. Thick muds and marls accumulated on the sea floor, rapidly burying shells and preserving them in extraordinary detail.

Stonebarrow Cliff and the surrounding Charmouth coastline are internationally famous fossil sites, producing ammonites, belemnites, crustaceans, fish remains, and even iconic marine reptiles such as ichthyosaurs. The unique chemical conditions of these sediments allowed occasional pyrite replacement, creating spectacular golden ammonites like this Promicroceras.

Fossil Species – Promicroceras Ammonite

Promicroceras is a classic Early Jurassic ammonite genus within the subclass Ammonoidea, class Cephalopoda. These extinct marine molluscs were close relatives of modern squid and nautilus, thriving as active swimmers and predators in Jurassic oceans.

Promicroceras is especially valued by collectors for its:

  • Compact, tightly coiled shell shape
  • Fine ribbing and ornamentation
  • Elegant whorl proportions
  • Strong association with the earliest Jurassic ammonite faunas

Ammonites such as Promicroceras are important index fossils, helping geologists date marine sediments with high precision.

Golden Pyrite Preservation – Natural Metallic Detail

The most remarkable feature of this specimen is its golden pyrite mineral coating, formed during fossilisation when iron sulphide minerals replaced or covered the original shell material.

Pyritised ammonites are highly prized because:

  • They display stunning metallic colour naturally
  • Fine surface features are enhanced dramatically
  • Each specimen is unique in tone and texture
  • They combine palaeontology with mineral beauty

This fossil represents an excellent example of Charmouth pyrite preservation, making it both scientifically fascinating and visually striking.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
