Geological Setting – Black Ven Marls, Lower Lias, Early Jurassic

This ammonite originates from the renowned Black Ven Marls, part of the Lower Lias Group, dating to approximately 190–200 million years ago during the Early Jurassic.

At this time, Dorset was submerged beneath a warm shallow sea filled with marine life. Ammonites flourished alongside belemnites, fish, crustaceans, and marine reptiles such as ichthyosaurs. Fine muds and marls accumulated in quiet offshore waters, rapidly burying shells and allowing excellent fossil preservation.

Stonebarrow Cliff and Charmouth remain among the most significant ammonite localities in Europe, producing world-famous specimens, including rare pyritised forms like this Promicroceras.

Fossil Species – Promicroceras Ammonite

Promicroceras is a small but highly collectible ammonite genus from the Early Jurassic, belonging to the subclass Ammonoidea, class Cephalopoda. These extinct marine molluscs were close relatives of modern squid and cuttlefish, living as active predators in Jurassic seas.

Promicroceras is especially recognised for:

  • Tight spiral coiling
  • Fine, well-defined ribbing
  • Distinctive compact morphology
  • Strong preservation potential in Lower Lias deposits

This genus is particularly popular with collectors due to its elegant form and association with classic Lyme Regis fossil horizons.

Golden Pyrite Mineralisation – Natural Metallic Beauty

A key feature of this fossil is its natural golden pyrite preservation. Pyritisation occurs when iron sulphide minerals form during fossilisation, replacing or coating the shell and producing a brilliant metallic finish.

Golden pyrite ammonites from Lyme Regis are highly valued because:

  • They are visually striking and increasingly rare
  • Pyrite highlights delicate ribbing and shell detail
  • Each specimen is completely unique
  • They make exceptional display pieces

This fossil is both scientifically significant and naturally beautiful, combining palaeontology with mineral artistry.

Authenticity, Discovery and Professional Preparation

This is a 100% genuine Promicroceras Golden Pyrite Ammonite, responsibly collected and expertly prepared.

  • Discovered by Alister and Alison (25 January 2026)

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
